Huawei Australia is proud to announce that it will donate over $34,000 to Deaf Australia following its partnership with the charity and the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League Charity Round on August 25th.
The donation was announced by Lisa Connors, Manager Corporate Relations and Programs of Huawei Australia, at the 2019 Meninga Medal, the Canberra Raiders club presentation night in Canberra.
As long term major sponsors of the Canberra Raiders Huawei Australia partnered with our NRL finals winning friends and Deaf Australia, the deaf-led peak organization representing deaf people in Australia, for NRL Charity Round to help create more awareness around the issues facing deaf Australians in their everyday lives.
Huawei Australia raised the funds for Deaf Australia via an online auction of the special jerseys worn by Raiders players in the NRL Charity Round – with nearly $20,000 raised in the auction and from match-day donations. Huawei Australia also made a direct donation of $15,000.
Before the game against the Manly Sea Eagles on August 25th over 20,000 fans took part in a World Record Attempt at the largest ever simultaneous public sign-language display.
Using the local Auslan sign-language platform the assembled Raiders and Sea Eagles fans smashed the existing World Record live on national TV via the live coverage on the Nine Network.
Lisa Connors, Manager Corporate Relations and Programs of Huawei Australia said:
“Huawei is very proud to be able to make this donation to Deaf Australia which we hope will help them carry on the fantastic work they do with the deaf community in Australia.
“We very much hope that by working with such a wonderful high-profile partner as the Canberra Raiders we have helped to play our part in helping more Australians understand the challenges that deaf Australians face in their every day lives.
“We would also like to say a very sincere thanks to the Canberra Raiders players and staff that helped us with this campaign – we could not have done it without them and we wish them all the very best of luck as they chase Grand Final glory in on October 6th.
Don Furner, CEO of Canberra Raiders said:
“Our partnership with Huawei continues to help us deliver awareness and to raise money for many special causes and we’re proud this year to have supported Deaf Australia.”
“Everyone at the Raiders loved being part of the NRL Charity Round this year and were thrilled with the response from our fantastic fans to the World Record attempt, it was a great way to demonstrate the power of sport in bringing people together for the greater good.
“We would like to thank our fans for their incredible generosity in helping to raise these funds for Deaf Australia and thank Huawei for their continued support of the club.”
